Huge rise in teenage self-harm in the UK

Today's figures reveal over 20% of 14-yr-old girls have deliberately harmed themselves in the past 12 months

You may be wondering how to help, if this could be happening in your family. But how can you tell the state of your own child's mental health?

Look for and notice any of these warning signs:

• Unusual tiredness

• Irritability or sudden anger

• Withdrawal from normal family interactions

• Changes in the way they dress (possibly to cover up areas of skin)

What can you do if you notice any of these things?

• Make private time to talk to your child and listen without judgment on a regular basis. Be aware that if other family members are around it can make it difficult for young people to open up. Young people often feel unable to express their feelings initially - this is normal: give it time.

• Get professional help and guidance as soon as possible BEFORE THINGS TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE - if there is a problem then, sadly, it can quickly begin to affect your child's schooling at this critical time in their development which can, in turn, cause further problems. I have worked with dozens of young people and I passionately believe that help and guidance should be made available in every school, especially in the wake of evidence such as today's announcement. However this comes with a cost and might not be possible for all schools.

How do you find professional help?

• If your child's school has a resident counsellor perhaps you might encourage them to make an appointment.

• Charities exist offering free counselling for children. Mind is a national organisation with a good reputation although, because it's free, there is normally a waiting list.
